Christina Wells

Christina Wells is a pen, ink and coloured pencil illustrator who creates clean, representational art. She prefers a literal approach, capturing the details of things that already exist in her everyday or in nature, portraying these in her own style, often with a bit of whimsy.

For Pierre and the Last Gargoyle of Paris…

Christina created spot illustrations with details of real-world objects, bringing a soft and classic feel to the pages. Each drawing a meaningful snapshot, beautifully portraying something representative of the character or a key moment of theirs in the plot.

The illustrations have also taken on an extra layer of depth and symbolism through the eyes of the author, perfectly connecting the physical objects to the heart of the storyline.

Bringing "Marielle Allard" to life

The character of Marielle Allard, Pierre's grand mama appears from the very start of the book, but her story only really evolves in later chapters, as her life as she knows it, changes forever.

She is regularly found cleaning and cooking and so it was a natural step to look at cooking utensils to represent her journey on the book.

We picked a certain scene in the story where a pan is dropped by Marielle, and looked at various ways of sketching a design, finally settling on the one showing the contents of the saucepan spilling, representing Marielle's life being upturned.

Beyond the pages

As well as starting to get ideas together for illustrating her next project, Christina is working on some new greeting card designs for the season ahead and contemplating an entry for her local ‘Open’ exhibition. Take a look at some of her work below.
